TomTom NV is a Dutch manufacturer of automotive navigation systems referred to as Tom Tom GPS systems. Before being made available to the mass markets, the major technologies which were required for automobile navigation underwent considerable refinement, despite being available as early as the '70s. TomTom is the biggest manufacturer of navigation systems in Europe and fast gaining ground in the United States. Navigation devices and navigation software for installing on mobile devices are the two types of products they offer. These devices provide a birds-eye-view of the road and they also give a direct overhead map view. The GPS receiver provides spoken and visual directions on how to reach your chosen destination and also shows your precise location.
An Array of Features to Choose From
Although some offer Bluetooth, hands free calling, FM transmission and enhanced positioning technology, the hardware on Tom Tom GPS systems is pretty much the same in all their units. The software is the big difference between the models. Some or all of the following are offered by their array of models: navigation package, voice control, traffic data, text-to-speech, a fold and go easy port mount and a USB car charge, and maps (some offer only the US; some offer maps of Canada, Mexico and Europe depending on the model you choose).
An all in one device is the TomTom GPS system Go. It has a touch screen, speaker, USB port and an internal lithium ion battery.
